Creating an equitable and just workplace takes time. For many, this is a long and tiring journey. There has been a lot of discussion, yet little sustainable and impactful action. This session invites participants to explore three questions in small groups:
- What does this workplace look like?
- How does it feel to the employees who work there?
- How do we get there?
To contain the scope of the discussion, it will focus on the fall of 2021, on the assumption that many of us anticipate our campuses to reopen at that time.

Fair and equitable recruitment and hiring practices are a key value for libraries. Yet challenges and barriers continue to exist. This panel of human resources and diversity experts will present strategies for overcoming barriers and building an effective recruitment program.

4:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. Reimagining the Organizational Culture Post-pandemic

As libraries manage the pandemic, new workplace models bring implications for new and/or alternative organizational cultures. We’ve utilized new workplace models just long enough that they will undoubtedly have implications on previously held organizational beliefs and cultures. This session will explore what drives behaviors and the processes by which new cultures are created, what determines which pieces are left behind and which are built upon. Leaders must ask themselves what behaviors they are willing to invite in, that will help the organization move forward. How will this new normal challenge organizations to uncover, channel, and stimulate knowledge and skills hiding in the organization that is creating new patterns and behaviors? With leadership more frequently occurring at all levels, roles, and responsibilities during the rapid start-stop-start pandemic period, what becomes the role of mid-management when traditional models of performance management change? What will performance metrics look like when the ways in which we solve problems have changed focus from process to outcome? Join David Zweig to learn how organizations respond to culture change and to learn some strategies for managing some of the new behaviors that have emerged with the rise of the hybrid workplace.
