Session participants will be asked to share their thoughts on the presentation and how libraries and library staff can be part of the solution.

Transformations in Scholarly Communications: Part 1

This two-part program highlights several activities under development or in stages of implementation through collective action and other partnerships.

Part 1 features a panel of ARL member directors addressing campus coalition building to transform the existing scholarly communication system, with a particular emphasis on faculty engagement.

Part 2, following a break, is divided into two concurrent sessions on (1) community-owned infrastructure and (2) partnerships in scholarly publishing.

The goal of this program is to highlight work underway in ARL libraries and share a range of perspectives and strategies regarding scholarly communications.

In Part 1: Jeff MacKie-Mason will share the UC experience of building political support on campus, particularly with faculty, for terminating a system-wide contract with Elsevier over the company’s failure to meet UC’s core objectives of (1) default open access for UC-authored articles and (2) a reduction in costs.

Chris Bourg will describe the faculty engagement process used by the MIT institute-wide OA Task Force, which she co-chairs. The task force recommendations “aim to support and increase the open sharing of MIT publications, data, software, and educational materials.” Bourg will highlight a recommendation for department-level plans for supporting open science.

Elaine Westbrooks worked with the UNC Faculty Council to pass a resolution to “work with the University Libraries to support open access, affordability, and transparency in scholarly publishing by affirming our commitment to UNC’s Open Access Policy.” Westbrooks will discuss feedback from faculty and UNC Libraries’ ongoing conversations around the resolution and her public statement in support of the UC action.

Moderator:
Clifford Lynch, Executive Director, Coalition for Networked Information

Chris Bourg, Director, MIT Libraries

Jeff MacKie-Mason, University Librarian and Chief Digital Scholarship Officer, UC Berkeley

Elaine Westbrooks, Vice Provost of University Libraries & University Librarian, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Community-Owned Infrastructure

Principals from the Open Platform Initiative will lead ARL member representatives in the continuation of a grassroots conversation about taking collective action to ensure the interoperability, sustainability, and scalability of core academy-owned open scholarly infrastructure. This initiative is related to broader collaborations between the Joint Roadmap for Open Science Tools (JROST), the international Invest in Open Infrastructure project (IOI), SPARC, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation–funded Scholarly Commons work In the Open, which is currently undertaking an exhaustive inventory of open infrastructure that supports digital scholarship. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the Open Platform concept and how it intersects with the broader landscape of open infrastructure initiatives. Participants will also provide direct input into formative discussions about the vision, direction, and resourcing of the initiative.

Speakers:
Lisa Carter, Vice Provost for Libraries and University Librarian, University of Wisconsin–Madison

Yolanda Cooper, University Librarian, Emory University

Ann Thornton, University Librarian, Columbia University

Partnerships in Scholarly Publishing

Destabilizing a Dominant Narrative

Doing good is not enough because there is still history in the making. What are the challenges we are facing in order to change the dominant narrative? Lynn Pasquerella will discuss the AAC&U’s partnership with higher education institutions to develop Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers. TRHT centers are creating action plans with transformative goals to change the narrative, and support racial healing and relationship building. Ruth Koleszar-Green will share stories about her work to reassert native culture in traditional and contemporary times. Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission is a restart of a conversation that Indigenous people have been trying to have for generations.
