The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) announces the selection of five master of library and information science (MLIS) students to participate in the 2013–15 ARL/Music Library Association (MLA) Diversity and Inclusion Initiative (DII):

Jakilah Mason, University of Pittsburgh
Internship host: University of Pittsburgh Theodore M. Finney Music Library

Patrick Sifuentes, Dominican University

Ricky Williams, University of Pittsburgh
Internship host: University of Pittsburgh Theodore M. Finney Music Library

“In academic libraries we have ongoing difficulty recruiting enough librarians of color and, in general, we have difficulty in certain subject specializations that are essential in research libraries,” said Sarah Pritchard, Dean of Libraries and Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian at Northwestern University, a host institution for the DII. “To have a program like this that addresses both goals is extremely valuable.”

The DII offers a generous suite of financial benefits to program participants as well as an internship in a partner music/performing arts library, a formal mentoring program, complimentary student membership in MLA, support to attend the MLA Annual Meeting, and career placement assistance.

This collaborative diversity recruitment program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), ARL, and MLA. The program reflects the joint commitment of ARL and MLA members to address the growing need for professional staff in music and performing arts libraries who better reflect the evolving demographics of students and faculty in those fields.

Applications are currently being accepted on a rolling basis for the ARL/MLA DII. For application instructions and additional information, consult the DII website.
