The University of Miami (UM) Libraries seeks nominations and applications for a creative, innovative professional to serve as the Instructional and Information Services Librarian of the Department of Learning, Research, and Clinical Information Services (LRCIS) on UM’s Medical Campus. Under the direction of the Department Head for LRCIS, the Instructional and Information Services Librarian works as part of a team of librarians whose expertise and knowledge base support educational, clinical, research, and administrative activities at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSoM). Specifically, this includes teaching of classes, expert searching of the biomedical literature, reference services, unit liaisons, creation and maintenance of resource guides and other web content, and clinical, data, and research services in support of UMMSoM students, faculty, staff and residents, and primary teaching hospital personnel. Selected services in support of unaffiliated health care professionals, librarians, and the public are also provided. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Medical Education and Student Support
  • Instruct medical students in the NextGen medical curriculum, including courses on evidence-based practice, information literacy, and the research process.
  • Create instructional materials in multiple formats (videos, online tutorials, Resource Guides, Blackboard classes, etc.) for use by students, residents, faculty, and staff.
  • Participate in the Personal Librarian Program (PLP) for medical students to customize library services and resources, and provide a single point of contact for these services.
  • Lead library instruction efforts and planning, in collaboration with medical school faculty and department head.
  • Conduct classes and workshops for students, faculty, and staff on the use of medical, nursing, and other health sciences-related services and resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty and library staff to plan, deliver, and assess library and instructional services.
  • Provide innovative evidence-based practice and information literacy instruction.
  • Perform advanced subject-specific professional library work and related tasks as required primarily in the graduate disciplines at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
  • Work collaboratively with library faculty and staff to support the development of inclusive and representative programming and services that are accessible and meet the needs of all Miller School of Medicine students.
Research and Clinical Support
  • Engage in bibliographic searches and the library’s evidence synthesis review service, including systematic reviews, in collaboration with faculty, residents, students, administrators, and staff.
  • Consult with graduate students and faculty on individual or group-related research projects.
  • Assess library needs of medical students, faculty, researchers, and clinicians.
  • Train library patrons on use of electronic resources and citation management tools such as PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, RefWorks, EndNote, and others.
  • Serve as Library Liaison with designated departments on campus to increase awareness of library resources and services.
  • Provide guidance for compliance with the NIH Public Access mandate.
  • Advise on the depositing of publications, data sets, and other research output by UM researchers/authors into Scholarship@Miami, UM’s research information hub.
Other responsibilities may include:
  • Participate in professional activities and contribute to developments in the field of library science and/or subject-specific discipline through scholarship, presentations, publications, and service.
  • Assist in department and library activities.
  • Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, faculty, students, researchers, and clinicians.
  • Promote library services and resources in response to the training, curriculum, research, and patient care needs of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine faculty, staff, students, and affiliates.
  • Support scholarly publishing activities by the University community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of the position classification.
