The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the fifth profile in a series highlighting digital scholarship support at ARL member libraries. The latest installment in this series features the work of the University of Virginia (UVA) Library, which has facilitated e-scholarship in a variety of forms for more than 20 years.
The University of Virginia profile presents a brief history of the evolution of digital scholarship support at UVA, focusing on the Scholars’ Lab (SLab), which was formed in 2006 by combining three separate units: the Electronic Text Center, the Geographical and Statistical Information Center, and Research Computing Support. The profile describes the current work of the Scholars’ Lab—including information about collaborations, staffing, training, and fellowships—and concludes with a discussion of challenges and solutions. Three selected projects are featured and linked to: Neatline, a suite of tools that enable storytelling with maps and timelines; Mapping the Catalogue of Ships, an interactive map of possible itineraries from Homer’s Iliad; and Take Back the Archive, an online archive of primary sources about sexual violence at UVA.
