The next offering of the DuraSpace/DLF E-Science Institute—designed to help academic and research libraries develop a strategic agenda for e-research support, with a particular focus on the sciences—will run December 2013 through April 2014. The institute is limited to 25 institutions and the registration deadline is Monday, November 25, 2013.
The E-Science Institute consists of a series of interactive modules that take small teams of individuals from your institution through a dynamic learning process to strengthen and advance their strategy for supporting computational scientific research. The coursework begins with a series of exercises for teams to complete at their institutions, and culminates with an in-person workshop. Local institution assignments help staff establish a high-level understanding of research-support needs and issues.
Originally funded and developed by the sponsors and supporting institutions of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) / Digital Library Federation (DLF), the E-Science Institute was previously only available to ARL, CLIR, and DLF members. Going forward the E-Science Institute will be managed by the DuraSpace organization in partnership with CLIR/DLF, and will be open to all institutions. The current offering of the institute includes improvements based on participant and faculty feedback as well as content updates as e-research services continue to mature individually and collectively.
An E-Science Institute Success Story
The University of Cincinnati (UC) E-Science Institute team found the course to be particularly helpful in jump-starting strategic planning and implementation at their institution. The UC team got to work when they returned from the two-day capstone event held in Washington, DC, in December of 2012.
Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian at UC feels that the institute offered a real opportunity for libraries and central IT organizations to partner together to take a critical look at digital scholarship and the research agenda. By demonstrating the power of partnerships, UC vice president for IT and CIO Nelson Vincent agrees that the institute helped UC move forward towards next-century planning.
