ARL Executive Institute: Research Libraries Navigating Challenges to Free Expression, Academic Freedom, and Inclusion (Invitation Only)

Thursday, October 19, 2023

As educational and cultural institutions committed to inclusiveness and equity as well as academic freedom and free expression, research libraries and their parent institutions in Canada and the US are experiencing complicated challenges to these deeply held values, both from their constituent communities and in law and policy.

This fall, immediately following the Fall Association Meeting, ARL will hold its first daylong Executive Institute—an interactive learning opportunity for ARL member representatives. The theme of this institute will be research libraries navigating challenges to free expression, academic freedom, and inclusion.

The institute will include expert-led, research library–tailored workshops by PEN America on the legal foundations of free expression and academic freedom, as well as strategically handling tense moments and their aftermath. Emerson Sykes, senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and internationally recognized expert at the intersection of free speech and racial equity, will provide the keynote address.

This offering is designed to address research library executive strategic decision-making and partnerships and to provide a forum for confidential, peer-to-peer learning and conversation.
