Northwestern University has named Xuemao Wang the new Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, effective September 1, 2022.

Wang has served as dean of libraries and university librarian at the University of Cincinnati (UC) since 2012. In 2019 he took on the additional title and responsibilities of vice provost of digital scholarship at UC. Wang has raised the UC library system’s visibility regionally, nationally, and internationally through innovation, collaboration, and partnership. He also has emphasized diversity, equity, inclusion, and access by establishing advisory groups, opportunities for staff professional development, and mentoring programs for underrepresented students.

Prior to joining UC, Wang served as associate vice provost of University Libraries at Emory University. He also worked at Johns Hopkins University’s Sheridan Libraries, the Metropolitan New York Library Council, and Queens Borough Public Library in New York City. Before that, he spent numerous years gaining academic librarian experience in China.

Wang is active in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). He served on the Innovation Lab Committee (2016–2017, vice-chair 2017–2018, chair 2018–2019), the Leadership Fellows Task Force (chair 2015–2017), the ARL Academy Design Team (2015–2016), and the Diversity and Leadership Committee (2013–2015). He was also an ARL Leadership Fellow (2011–2012).

At Northwestern, Wang will succeed Sarah Pritchard, who will step down as dean of libraries and Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian in August 2022 and retire in early 2023. Pritchard has led the Northwestern University Libraries since 2006.
