ScholCommCamp at ACRL 2015

Join the first-ever unconference sponsored by the ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication (ISC). This collaborative and informal experience is right for you if you have good knowledge of scholarly communication topics and passion for library-led outreach on campus.

During this community-driven experience, you will come together with your fellow participants to share skills, learn what has worked at other campuses, and build plans for your library’s scholarly communication program throughout the day. You and your colleagues will set the day’s agenda on the spot during the first session of this spontaneous and timely event. ScholCommCamp will be an exceptionally productive day in which you define problems, create solutions, and develop plans so that you can improve your library’s scholarly communication program. Join us for this fun, lively day!

ScholCommCamp is being underwritten by the ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication and being offered in conjunction with the ACRL 2015 Conference in Portland, Oregon. Registration for the ACRL 2015 conference is not required to register for ScholCommCamp.

Facilitators

Our lead “wrangler” for ScholCommCamp is Amy Buckland, institutional repository manager at the University of Chicago. She will help participants develop ground rules, build the agenda, and provoke participation. Amy will be joined by Char Booth, director of research, teaching, and learning services at the Claremont Colleges Library, and Carmen Mitchell, institutional repository librarian at Cal State San Marcos.

Amy Buckland

Amy Buckland recently moved to the University of Chicago where she is the institutional repository manager. Previously she was coordinator of scholarly communications at McGill University Library, where she was responsible for open access initiatives, publishing support, copyright, digital humanities, and research data services. She has a bachelor of arts degree from Concordia University (Montreal) where she studied political science and women’s studies, and an MLIS from McGill University. Prior to joining the library world, she worked in publishing for 14 years, and thinks academic libraryland is ripe for a revolution.

The Why

Changes in scholarly communication offer librarians an opportunity to take an active role in modernizing and experimenting with the scholarly publishing system. In order to take an active role, we all need to understand and collaborate to create new knowledge, and challenge legacy processes. There is no better way to do that than in an unconference!

Char Booth

Early riser, devoted oceanite, and advocate of radical neutrality, Char Booth explores the integration of pedagogy, research, technology, and design in libraries. Char is the director of research, teaching, and learning services at the Claremont Colleges Library, and a faculty member of the ACRL Information Literacy Immersion Institute. Char presents and writes on topics related to the integration of pedagogy, assessment, technology, and design in libraries. She blogs at info-mational, tweets @charbooth, and her publications include the Ilene F. Rockman Instruction Publication of the Year–winning Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators (ALA Editions, 2011) and Informing Innovation: Tracking Student Interest in Emerging Library Technologies (ACRL, 2009).

The Why

I’m interested in this event because I believe that information literacy and scholarly communication have endless intersections that speak directly to the experiences and core concerns of students/faculty. I see this playing out constantly in my own work, so I want to learn from and contribute to a dialogue about how to more effectively connect the two in hopes of greater practical and conceptual impact on the academy and publishing writ large.

Carmen Mitchell

Carmen Mitchell is the institutional repository librarian at Cal State University San Marcos (CSUSM), and the convener for The California Academic and Research Libraries Scholarly Communication and Open Resources for Education interest group (SCORE). Prior to CSUSM, she worked in digital libraries at Loyola Marymount University and Harvard University. Outside of librarianship, Carmen likes cycling, craft beer, and hanging out with her pup Pixie. Why? In 75 words or less…

Many of us are dealing with the same types of issues, and yet we are still trying to come up with solutions. I’d like to share what has worked on my campus and I hope to learn about what others are successfully doing on their campuses. I’m also very interested in documentation, and am working to codify all of the CSUSM procedures—all to be shared, of course.

Registration

You are not required to register for the ACRL 2015 conference to register for ScholCommCamp.

When you register for ScholCommCamp, be prepared to tell us about yourself and why you are interested in participating, in 75 words or less. What do you hope to contribute and learn? This information will be shared publicly with all participants.

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees will be refunded up to and including February 11, 2015. After that date, no refunds will be issued. To request a refund of the registration fee, please contact angela@arl.org.
