Advanced XML: Further Adventures with XSLT

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Statistics & Assessment Program and the Digital Library Federation, a program of the Council on Library and Information Resources, are pleased to offer this workshop on advanced XML.

Taught by experienced XML/XSLT instructors and developers Matthew Gibson, Director of Digital Programs at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities at the University of Virginia, and Christine Ruotolo, Digital Services Manager at the University of Virginia Library, this three-day workshop will explore XSLT with a specific focus on the role of XSLT in digital library projects and an emphasis on practical tasks such as metadata crosswalking. The workshop will be a mix of lecture and hands-on demonstration and experimentation.

Lectures, exercises, and projects will allow participants to gain experience using some of the more powerful components of XSLT 1.0 and 2.0 including navigating the XML tree with XPath 2.0; working with recursion, modes, and named templates; using and creating functions; combining source documents and creating multiple result documents; sorting and grouping data; and using branching and control structures.

Prerequisites

This workshop is designed for information professionals who have a familiarity with XML markup and who would like to learn or expand their current knowledge of XSLT. Some understanding of XSLT and experience with markup such as HTML is a plus.

Preliminary Schedule

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday. Each day will be divided into four 90-minute sessions, with an ample lunch break and two shorter breaks between sessions. Each 90 minute session will cover a key technology and may include both lecture and exercises. There will be a 15-minute wrap-up session at the end of each day for general Q&A. A more concrete and fleshed out schedule will follow shortly.

Instructors

Matthew Gibson is Director of Digital Initiatives at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH). He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the VFH in 2005, Matthew served as Assistant Director and then Associate Director of the University of Virginia Library’s Electronic Text Center. At the VFH, he oversees Encyclopedia Virginia, a digital publication about Virginia history and culture; provides supervision and support for Documents Compass, a Mellon- and NHPRC-funded initiative to facilitate digitization and interoperability between documentary editions; and guides the short- and long-term planning for the organization’s digital efforts and scholarly communications. Matthew has a multitude of conference presentations and several publications to his credit, mostly in the field of digital library standards. For the past nine years he has taught XML application building workshops as an independent consultant and for the Association of Research Libraries.

Christine Ruotolo is the Digital Services Manager for Humanities and Social Sciences and Bibliographer for English Language and Literature at the University of Virginia Library. Before taking on her current role, she was Associate Director of Virginia’s Electronic Text Center, where she worked on developing and delivering full-text online literature collections. She has long been involved with the Text Encoding Initiative, serving for several years on its Board of Directors. She has presented and published on a range of subjects related to electronic text creation, interchange, and deployment in the classroom. Over the past nine years, she has taught numerous XML and XSLT workshops through the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Amigos Library Services, and Rare Books School.

Date/Location

The workshop will run each day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with breaks in the morning, afternoon, and for lunch. The ARL offices will play host to the workshop in the picturesque 8th floor conference room at 21 Dupont Circle, NW.

Fee

The fee for participation is $1,000. Beverages, coffee, and snacks provided for morning and afternoon breaks. Lunches will be on your own.

Cancellations

ARL reserves the right to cancel the event up to (and including) February 25, 2013. An e-mail announcement will be sent to registrants in the event of a cancellation. Registrants will receive a full refund.

Participant Cancellations

Written requests for cancellation will be honored until (and including) February 25, 2013, with a $150 cancellation fee. After that date, no refund will be given.
