The University of Ottawa Library is the intellectual hub of the campus and is utilized every day by thousands of students as well as faculty members and researchers. An essential partner in fulfilling the research, teaching and learning mission of the world’s largest bilingual University, the Library receives millions of visits per year and is composed of three main libraries – the Morisset Library (Arts and Science), the Brian Dickson Law Library and the Health Sciences Library – in addition to a number of special libraries. The Library’s collections, consisting of over 4 million items from rare print material to digital items and data sets, are rich, diverse and reflect the unique bilingual nature of the University. The University Library team consists of 144 employees, including 48 librarians and 96 support staff, who serve the students, faculty, and employees of the University, and who proudly participate in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge.
 
The University Librarian and Vice-Provost (Knowledge Systems) (hereafter ”University Librarian“) will play a critical role in providing strategic direction and leadership in advancing the University’s teaching and research mission through the adoption of emerging technologies, sound fiscal management and via strong advocacy for professional values and standards to a broad spectrum of external constituents. He/She will possess a strong vision and be prepared to identify critical Library and University needs and lead the Library team to address information challenges and the strategic future of the University Libraries through the development of a strategic plan that is both unifying and innovative. As a member of the senior administration team (SAT), the University Librarian ensures responsible stewardship of the University Libraries’ physical and financial resources and keeps the members of the senior administration informed of all activities in the division.
 
The successful candidate to assume this position must demonstrate a solid understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education and academic librarianship. He/she will have a strong record of professional advocacy, scholarly activities and participation in professional organizations at the national and international level. He/she must also have excellent management and interpersonal skills with proven commitments in the provision of library services and information resources in an increasingly digital world. A strong collaborator and mentor, the successful candidate will possess the ability to work effectively within a collegial system of governance and the facility to encourage, inspire and mobilize others. He/she must also be proficient in both English and French.
